Steelhead fishing on the Oregon coast

I just returned from a trip last week to visit with some good friends from business school and fish for steelhead on the north coast of Oregon. We drifted the North Nehalem river just above the tidal reach. There was a cold snap this weekend as is evident in this picture of Moltnoma Falls.

Because of the cold we were not all that eager to get on the water too early, so we set out from out hotel in Wheeler about 8AM and got to this boat launch.

You can tell from the picture that the launch was pretty hairy. Our inflatable handled it fine and slid down without event. We did see an aluminum drift boat launch, or perhaps I should say we heard one launch. We covered the water by swinging flies using spey rods. Here is the river and then my good buddy Steve sending out some line.

The group of us covered quite a bit of water, with only this one bright wild winter run fish to show for it.

Finally, some of you might recognize the rock in this picture from the movie Goonies.
